Chad Owens started working at Gruno's Diamonds in Rockford about six months ago. But before he could get the job he had to get fingerprinted as part of a background check.
"I mean you're trusted with millions of dollars worth of merchandise on a daily basis; you want to make sure you got the right people in place," explains Chad Owens, sales manager at Gruno's.
It's a technique that seems to be catching on. Rockford Detective Agency does the LiveScan fingerprinting as part of their background checks.
"When we take fingerprints the reports are immediately transmitted to the Illinois State Police and FBI," says Carol Roberts, chief operating officer with Rockford Detective Agency.
Fingerprinting only takes about ten minutes, it's all electronic which means no ink and instant results.
Roberts explains, "There's no waiting for a couple of days; it's instant."
If a crime is instantly reported back, Rockford Detective Agency can detain the applicant if necessary, like if he or she has a warrant.
Gruno's owner and president Brent Meade says it's a precaution his business and many others should take.
"The detective agency can run down and usually find out through past employers more information, more accurate information than an employer can find out on his own," says Meade.

A private investigator or private detective (often shortened to PI or private eye) is a person who can be hired by individuals or groups to undertake investigatory law services. Private detectives/investigators often work for attorneys in civil cases. Many work for insurance companies to investigate suspicious claims. Before the advent of no-fault divorce, many private investigators were hired to search out evidence of adultery or other illegal conduct within marriage to establish grounds for a divorce. Despite the lack of legal necessity for such evidence in many jurisdictions, according to press reports collecting evidence of adultery or other "bad behaviour" by spouses and partners is still one of the most profitable activities investigators undertake, as the stakes being fought over now are child custody, alimony, or marital property disputes.
Many jurisdictions require PIs to be licensed, and they may or may not carry firearms depending on local laws. Some are ex-police officers, some are former federal agents, some are ex-spies and some are ex-military, some used to work in a private military company, some are former bodyguards and security guards, although many are not. Most of them do not arrest criminals or put them in custody. They are expected to keep detailed notes and to be prepared to testify in court regarding any of their observations on behalf of their clients. Great care is required to remain within the scope of the law, otherwise the investigator may face criminal charges. Irregular hours may also be required when performing surveillance work.
PIs also engage in a large variety of work that is not usually associated with the industry in the mind of the public. For example, many PIs are involved in process serving, the personal delivery of summons, subpoenas and other legal documents to parties in a legal case. The tracing of absconding debtors can also form a large part of a PI's work load. Many agencies specialize in a particular field of expertise. For example, some PI agencies deal only in tracing. Others may specialize in technical surveillance counter-measures (TSCM), sometimes called electronic counter measures (ECM), which is the locating and dealing with unwanted forms of electronic surveillance (for example, a bugged boardroom for industrial espionage purposes). Other PIs, also known as Corporate Investigators, specialise in corporate matters, including anti-fraud work, the protection of intellectual property and trade secrets, anti-piracy, copyright infringement investigations, due diligence investigations and computer forensics work.
Increasingly, modern PIs prefer to be known as "professional investigators" or Licensed Private Investigators (LPI's) rather than "private investigators" or "private detectives". This is a response to the image that is sometimes attributed to the profession and an effort to establish and demonstrate the industry to be a proper and respectable profession. However, in 2009 a Toronto Star journalist obtained a private investigator's license in Ontario with no training, and reported that other Ontarians had done the same.

Ask to see a physical copy of their private investigator license (verify the expiration date)
Check with the appropriate state’s private investigator associations to verify memberships, obtain feedback and recommendations.

Ask the private investigator you wish to hire to provide a resume or personal dossier
Ask the private investigator or private investigation agency you are considering hiring to provide examples of their work (sample reports, newspaper articles, success stories, etc.)
Agree on pricing upfront. Discuss requirements for a retainer, hourly fees, expense reimbursement, etc.
Discuss and agree upon the services you wish the private eye to provide, and agree upon the results you expect. If both parties have a clear understanding of the expectations, it is easier to gauge performance. In addition, having a signed contract is always a good idea.
Before you hire a private investigator, meet them in person if you can, preferably at their place of business, agency office, etc. Many private investigators don't have an office, and don't necessarily need one to get results. But if they do, visiting their office will help you gain comfort on their legitimacy and perhaps the quality of their operation.
Find out whether the private investigator is properly insured (i.e. liability insurance). During the course of their work, the investigator may become injured or damage someone else's property.
Check out the private investigator's website. Do they have one? If so, is it a quality site with good information? We recommend checking out their website prior to making a phone call. If the website doesn't exist, or the link to the website is dead, it is possible they are out of business.
